Codian MCU 4500:
HD MCU of the year 2006

1. The very powerful Codian MCU 4500 Series of High Definition (HD) Voice and Video bridges can handle up to 40 HD videoconferencing systems; it is designed for the period in which users transition from SD to HD videoconferencing.

22 January 2007. Codian is a privately held company founded in 2002 to manufacture high performance video conferencing infrastructure products and in particular powerful MCUs. Some of the staff worked previously for Calista, a manufacturer of Voice over IP products, acquired by Cisco Systems in 1999. Calista’s products and technology were incorporated into the Cisco IP Communications product range.

The Codian range of Video Network Infrastructure Solutions includes: The MCU 4200 series; the ISDN GW 3200 series which provides seamless connectivity to the ISDN world from the Codian MCU 4200 series without the need for a gatekeeper; The IP VCR 2200 series of IP Video Conference Recorders; the Media Service Engine 8000 carrier-class MCU; and the Codian MCU 4500 SERIES High Definition Voice and Video Bridge (discussed here).

The Codian MCU 4500 Series of High Definition Voice and Video bridges is designed for the period in which users transition from SD to HD videoconferencing. It will enable the many users who want to conduct mixed SD and HD video meetings. The Codian MCU 4500 series is the first conferencing bridge with the power to deliver a true high definition (HD) multimedia experience. It is available for 12, 20, 30 and 40 HD video participants.

The Codian MCU 4500 includes the features inherent in the proven Codian MCU 4200 series: endpoint agnostic, Universal Port™ and Packet Safe™ technology, video firewall, web conferencing, streaming and built-in gatekeeper.
The Codian MCU 4500 SERIES offers exceptional High Definition Performance: Crystal clear, full-motion, high definition video on every port .... 720p H.264 video at 30 frames per second; Continuous Presence with perfect quality and limited only by the capabilities of the endpoint and network. The MCU 4500 supports multi-standard HD audio and high resolution data conferencing.

The high performance architecture of the Codian 4500 scales up to match future capabilities of new HD endpoints; it is ready for 1080p full HD resolution video. There is seamless integration of HD with existing SD equipment and with next generation devices such as 3G, SIP and desktop video.

You can schedule, manage and monitor individual HD conferences and independently select the continuous presence layout for each user using the web-based user interface. Video auto attendant supports both scheduled and on-demand conferences. The XML API provides integration with scheduling and management applications.

The Codian Management Platform (CMP) is announced this week and will be available in Q2. It provides for scheduling conferences on the Codian MCU 4200, MCU 4500 and MSE 8000. It also enables automatic conference recording using the Codian IP VCR 2200. The system centers around an application server running Linux which delivers a highly scalable solution. Users can schedule conferences with a Web browser, incorporating an attractive, easy-to-use Web 2.0 interface; or if they prefer, they can use clients such as Microsoft Outlook. Designed for both end users and administrators, CMP incorporates advanced features such as integration with corporate authentication servers and address books as well as intelligent resource allocation and resilience.

For the 2005 Awards, we called the carrier-class Codian MSE 8000 “the Ferrari of MCUs”. Codian announced the Media Services Engine 8000 at InfoComm in June 2005. The MSE 8000 is fault tolerant, scalable and easy to manage, offering a very reliable solution for world-wide video-conferencing. With slots for 10 hot-swap option blades, the MSE 8000 can provide up to 360 ports of multipoint video conferencing today, and in the future will scale to over 1,000 ports in a single chassis. The Codian MSE 8000 effectively supports the transition of all voice and video conferencing services to a SIP-based architecture and allows a single platform to be used for voice and video.

The MSE 8000 is the ideal choice for the enterprise customer who is looking for the highest levels of audio/video reliability, security and performance. In combination with the Codian 4200 MCU Series, the MSE 8000 offers enormous flexibility of connection between the corporate headquarters and world-wide offices. The customer can include a combination of multipoint conferencing, streaming, recording and gateway blades.

Codian 4500 Series and MSE 8000 MCUs are generally more powerful than their competitors and offer industry-first features like the recording and streaming conferences. They are designed for High Definition, SIP and IP-based networks. That is why the Codian range is again choisen as one of The Four Best New Video Network Infrastructure Product Ranges of the Year 2006.
